1BCPS and BCIDP compared
≠ marks rows where the two differ.
| Point of comparison | BCPS | BCIDP |
|---|---|---|
| Exam frame | 150 items, 125 scored, in 3 h 45 min | 150 items, 125 scored, in 3 h 45 min |
| Differs: Content outline | Patient Care Specialty Areas 36%, Therapeutics and Patient Management 36%, Professional Practice 28% (effective September 2024) | Pathophysiology and Epidemiology of Infections 18%, Therapeutics and Patient Management 60%, Professional Practice 22% (effective October 2025) |
| Differs: Share about infection | One of five areas in subdomain 1A (17 items for all five); about 3% by our estimate | The whole outline |
| Differs: Route without a residency | 3 years of practice, at least 50% within the outline’s scope | 4 years of infectious diseases practice |
| Differs: Residency routes | A completed postgraduate year one (PGY1) residency | PGY1 plus 2 years of infectious diseases practice, or a PGY2 in infectious diseases |
| Differs: Active holders | More than 31,580 | More than 2,380 |
| Differs: 2025 first-time pass rate | 55.9% (984 of 1,760) | 74.2% (178 of 240) |
| Fees and cycle | $600, $300 retake, $125 a year, 7 years | $600, $300 retake, $125 a year, 7 years |
The 3% figure is our estimate from BPS’s 2023 job-analysis ratings; BPS itself weights only domains and subdomains. Holder counts are BPS’s live counters.
2The three BCIDP routes, and where BCPS stands on each
Four years of infectious diseases practice
The same years can also meet the BCPS 3-year route, provided at least half that time fell within the BCPS outline’s scope.
A PGY1, then two years in infectious diseases
BCPS opens the day the PGY1 is complete; BCIDP opens once the two practice years are logged.
A PGY2 in infectious diseases
Qualifies for BCIDP on its own. How residency years count on the BCPS side is set out in BCPS eligibility requirements.
3What each outline expects you to carry
BCIDP spends 18% of its outline on the pathophysiology and epidemiology of infections and 60% on therapeutics and patient management, all within one specialty; professional practice takes the remaining 22%. The depth runs from organism to regimen to monitoring.
BCPS asks for working command of antimicrobials as one domain among many. The infectious diseases domain page covers empiric choice, de-escalation and C. difficile at the level the BCPS outline reaches, and vancomycin AUC vs trough is the deepest concept page in that area.
The larger BCPS demand sits elsewhere. Therapeutics and Patient Management (36%) and Professional Practice (28%) apply across every disease area, so an ID pharmacist moving toward BCPS needs heart failure, diabetes, renal dosing and biostatistics as much as antibiotics.
4If infection is your field
Where does this site cover infections for BCPS?
On the infectious diseases domain page, in the vancomycin AUC vs trough concept page, and in the practice set filtered to infectious diseases.
How many pharmacists hold BCIDP?
More than 2,380 on the BPS infectious diseases page, next to more than 31,580 for BCPS. Both numbers are live counters.
How does ambulatory care compare on the same terms?
BCACP shares the exam frame and asks for ambulatory care practice instead; BCPS vs BCACP has its table, and the BPS credentials overview sets five side by side.
