Fact check

What is the BCPS exam format?

The BCPS exam is a computer-based multiple-choice test taken at Pearson VUE test centers. Most items ask for one answer out of four options, you move through them in a fixed order with no going back, and you get an on-screen calculator but no table of normal lab values.

Short answer

4 optionsone best answer, most items

The great majority of BCPS items are single-answer multiple choice with four options. BPS says some exams may include a small share of multiple-response items, where you choose three or four answers from up to eight options, and items supplemented by an image.

1The format, piece by piece

Single-answer items
The bulk of the exam: a case or question, four options, one best answer (BPS Pharmacotherapy page).
Multiple-response items
Possible on some exams, in a small share: three or four correct responses from as many as eight options. The item states how many to choose.
Image items
Any item may carry an image beside the text, per the same BPS page.
Navigation
Forward-only. You answer in the order presented, cannot skip, and cannot return once you confirm and move on. BPS applies no penalty for guessing (Candidate’s Guide).
Calculator
An on-screen scientific calculator is provided for the whole exam (Candidate’s Guide).
Lab values
No reference table of normal values and no unit-conversion chart. Results print in the units used in US practice, so the ranges you judge them against have to come from memory.
Where you test
Pearson VUE test centers. Online testing through OnVUE is not a standard option: BPS approves it case by case and in advance for eligible candidates in the United States, Australia and Canada (BPS online testing page).

2Rehearse the format before test day

  • Open the free sample items on the BPS Pharmacotherapy page to see how items are laid out; BPS offers them to show the format, not as a self-assessment.
  • Answer timed blocks with no review so forward-only becomes routine. The BCPS practice test can be filtered to one domain first and mixed later.
  • Do PK and dosing arithmetic on a plain on-screen calculator instead of your phone.
  • Read lab-heavy cases without a reference card nearby.
  • Read each item’s instruction line first; on a multiple-response item it tells you how many to pick.
  • Know what the end of the session looks like: a preliminary pass or fail appears on screen, and the report follows, as described under BCPS exam results.
